Venetian plaster is a type of wall finish composed of lime, marble dust, and natural pigments. It is applied manually in a number of thin coats and subsequently polished to produce a smooth stone-like surface with a subtle sheen. In certain instances, it may even resemble real marble or limestone.
The method is of Italian origin and was used in ancient times, but it gained popularity during the Renaissance period in Venice — thus the name. Now, it is applied in contemporary and traditional interiors for its natural appearance and rich texture.
How It’s Applied
Venetian plaster is not rolled on, like a coat of paint. It is hand-applied with a spatula or trowel, which creates a textured, slightly irregular appearance. Each coat is smoothed out and pushed down, and the last coat is frequently burnished to achieve a soft sheen or light-reflective finish.
Used effectively, it requires patience and skill. The surface to be used as a base must be smooth, clean, and dry. Two or three coats are usually used in most applications. Some are buffed to a high sheen, but others are left with a matte or more textured finish for a country look.
